Boehner Rolls Out GOP Jobs Plan

In a speech he’ll deliver this afternoon at the Economic Club of Washington, D.C., House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) will signal his party’s intentions to take up tax reform this Fall.

Boehner will also say that the House will consider several proposals within President Obama’s $447 billion job creation package, but will not accept a plan that is paid for in part by raising taxes.

Earlier this week, Obama called for limiting itemized deductions for taxpayers making more than $200,000 per year. Doing so, he said, would generate nearly $400 billion over the next decade. He added that another $4 billion in savings would come from ending subsidies for the oil and gas industry.

Many Republicans will likely support the president’s idea to extend payroll tax cuts for employees and to provide tax credits to businesses that hire veterans or long-term unemployed Americans. But a lot of rank-and-file Republicans, including most of those who align with the conservative-leaning Tea Party movement, will pressure leaders to oppose tax hikes at all costs.

You can watch a live stream of Boehner’s speech by logging onto Facebook and “Liking” his official Speaker’s office page. The speech begins at 1:00 pm.

Pelosi: Obama's Done His Part, Now It's Congress' Turn

Soon after President Obama presented his American Jobs Act to Congress on Monday, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) followed suit and released the following statement urging fellow members of Congress to schedule immediate action and hearings on the President’s legislation:

“President Obama has done his part: soon sending the American Jobs Act to Congress to create jobs, strengthen small businesses, rebuild America, and grow our economy now. We must take up and pass this legislation without further delay.

“For more than 250 days in the majority, House Republicans have failed to offer a jobs agenda. They now have the opportunity to change course, to pass the American Jobs Act, and to put people to work.

“Our nation’s families, workers, entrepreneurs, teachers, police officers, firefighters and veterans must not and cannot wait any longer; they cannot afford political gamesmanship.  Democrats are prepared to act now on the American Jobs Act, which is fully paid for. Republicans must join us to address the American people’s top priority: job creation.”

Bipartisan House Passes Intel Bill On Eve Of 9/11 Anniversary

In a 384-14 vote, the House voted nearly unanimously Friday to pass legislation that keeps federal entities vital in the America’s national security efforts funded through FY2012 .

Given that the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attack on America is just two days awe, the Intelligence Authorization Act for FY2012, originally introduced by Rep. Mike Rogers (R-Mich.), ensures agencies like the CIA, FBI, DEA, along with the Departments of State, Defense, Energy and Justice, among others, have the capabilities to operate and continue to keep the country protected from terror threats.

“This bill makes smart choices that will help eliminate wasteful spending while still ensuring that our intelligence community personnel have all the tools they need to keep America safe,” Deomcratic Whip Steny Hoyer said in a statement. “As we approach the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks and confront new threats to the homeland, we are reminded of the challenges we face and honor the brave men and women in the intelligence community who work around the clock to protect us.”

Aside from authorizing agencies vital to the nation’s national security, the bill would require officials to provide Congress with detailed information about the mission that ultimately ended in the death of Osama bin Laden.

Poll: GOP On Track To Upset Dems In N.Y. Special Election

Democrats may suffer an unlikely blow in next week’s New York special election to replace disgraced former Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-N.Y.), according to a recent poll released by Siena College.

Republican candidate Bob Turner holds a six-point lead over his Democratic counterpart David Weprin, according to the poll. The Queens-and-Brooklyn district has historically been carried by Democrats, but Turner has held his own and has even overcome a six-point disadvantage based on a pool conducted just four weeks ago.

The poll was conducted between Sept. 6-8 and included 886 likely voters. There is a margin of error of +/- 3.3 percent.
