GOP Tax Whiz Named Super-Committee Staff Director

Mark Prater, a senior tax counsel on the Republican side of the Senate Finance Committee, has been named staff director of the congressional “super-committee” tasked with recommending deficit reduction measures this Fall.

“The know-how and experience Mark brings to this difficult task is exactly what we agreed must be the top priority for the staff serving all the members of this Committee,” committee co-chairs Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.) and Rep. Jeb Hensarling (R-Texas) said in a joint statement.

Schumer: GOP Struggles To Play Catch Up With New Jobs Agenda

Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) released the following statement as a response to a new Republican jobs agenda House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) sent to rank-and-file Republicans Monday:

House Republicans are struggling to play catch up on jobs after Chairman Bernanke called for more aggressive fiscal policies than they have supported so far. But when they even stall common-sense measures like continuing the payroll tax cut for the middle class, it’s clear Republicans are still putting politics ahead of our economic recovery. Their agenda seems intended only to provide cover for blocking the kind of pro-growth proposals needed to make a difference.

Boehner Continues To Hammer Biden Over “One Child” Gaffe

House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) is continuing to press Vice President Joe Biden for saying China’s one-child policy is something he doesn’t “second guess,” despite a White House statement that followed reiterating both the administration’s and the Vice Presient’s disapproval of the law.

“Now that such a clarification has been offered, the Obama administration needs to back its backpedaling with action,” a statement from Boehner’s office reads.

The statement calls for the Vice President to publicly repudiate the policy and for President Obama to take a page from the Bush administration and withhold funding for the United Nation’s Population Fund since it supports China’s program.

“Until the administration takes these actions, the clarification issued by the Vice President’s spokesman Tuesday will ring hollow,” the statement reads.

Paul Ryan Kills White House Rumors

Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wisc.), the influential chairman of the House Budget Committee, swatted down rumors Monday that he was mulling a White House bid.

“I sincerely appreciate the support from those eager to chart a brighter future for the next generation.  While humbled by the encouragement, I have not changed my mind, and therefore I am not seeking our party’s nomination for President,” Ryan said in a statement.

Ryan added that he was hopeful his party would nominate a “candidate committed to a pro-growth agenda of reform that restores the promise and prosperity of our exceptional nation.”
