Boehner Upset At Dems Over Prospect Of Early Dismissal

In response to reports that House members may leave as early as this week to hit the campaign trail in their respective states and districts, House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-OH) issued the following statement:
“It appears Democratic Leaders would rather adjourn than help our economy create jobs by stopping all of President Obama’s job-killing tax hikes, even though a clear bipartisan majority in the House supports doing so. Instead of coming up with new ways to thwart the will of the people, Democratic Leaders should be working with Republicans to stop all of the tax hikes and cut government spending. Anything less fails our economy and shows that out-of-touch Washington Democrats are more focused on keeping their jobs than doing them.”

Van Hollen Blasts Boehner’s Economic Plan

A top Democrat in the House released a statement today assailing House Minority Leader John Boehner’s (R-Ohio) proposal to fix the economy.

“One of the key pieces of the Washington Republican agenda is repealing the remaining funds of the Recovery Act. This plan will terminate over 60,000 contracts and awards and extinguish more than $200 billion in economic activity at a critical moment. The result will be to put the brakes on the fragile recovery, kill thousands of new jobs, and create massive new uncertainty when the economy needs stability,” said Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.).

“Repealing this funding – which has created millions of jobs and brought our economy back from the brink of collapse – would mean taking contracts and grants back from small businesses and other entities that will use it to create jobs, rebuild our infrastructure, and provide necessary services. It will also put on the chopping block millions of dollars to support injured veterans,” Van Hollen added.

No Hint Of Compromise In Boehner Op-Ed

In an editorial published today by Politico, House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) continued to rail against President Obama on taxes, but opted not to expand on comments he made over the weekend.

Instead, Boehner repeated his desire to see Congress cut spending back to pre-2008 levels and freeze current tax rates on all Americans for two years, including those making more than $250,000 per year.

“Raising taxes will only hurt an already weakened job market,” he wrote.

Boehner said that in addition to his two-point plan to boost the nation’s economy, Republicans have created a website aimed at soliciting suggestions from members of the public.

Top House Democrat Slams Boehner's Economic Proposal

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) issued today a swift rebuke of Minority Leader John Boehner’s (R-Ohio) plan to lower government spending and create jobs.

“This morning, Leader Boehner said he wants to extend the tax cuts for the wealthiest few for two years, costing taxpayers $36 billion this coming year alone,” said Pelosi in a statement. “Boehner also supports permanently extending the tax cuts for the wealthy, which would add $700 billion to the deficit over the next 10 years.

“Mr. Boehner went on to say he wants to freeze spending at 2008 levels. That would cut critical funds for millions of Americans, including a cut of $13 billion in veteran health care and other benefits, even as the needs of our returning soldiers continue to grow.”

Speaker Boehner?

Politico is reporting today that House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) is positioning himself to be the face of the GOP ahead of this fall’s midterm elections. Boehner, along with help from the NRCC, recently launched a “Boehner for Speaker” fundraising committee. Of course, his party will have to win back the majority in the House in November in order for Boehner to wrestle the gavel from current Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.).
