Sen. Chuck Schumer Hopes To Pass Disclose Act Tuesday

The Democrats in the Senate will try to push a campaign finance reform bill forward this week. The Disclose Act is already passed in the House and if it goes through it would force special interest groups to reveal top donors in campaign advertisements. Republicans in the Senate are expected to block the legislation from moving forward, however, Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), the key author of the Disclose Act, stated during a conference call Monday that the Democrats are working very hard on getting a Republican to vote for the bill. Schumer hopes that the Senate will vote for the new legislation Tuesday.

Rep. Dennis Kucinich WikiLeaks, War In Afghanistan

Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio.) released the following statement after nearly 90,000 classified reports on the war in Afghanistan leaked via the website Wikileaks:

“These documents provide a fuller picture of what we have long known about Afghanistan: the war is going badly. It’s important to debate our presence in Afghanistan and Pakistan now,” wrote Kucinich in a press release Monday.

Report: RNC To Hold Event Featuring Breitbart

Talking Points Memo is reporting today that RNC Chairman Michael Steele will hold a fundraising event in August. Among those invited to attend is Andrew Breitbart, a conservative blogger who made headlines last week over a video he leaked to Fox News. A segment of the video showed a state-level Department of Agriculture official named Shirley Sherrod making what appeared to be racially biased comments at an NAACP event that took place back in March of this year. Sherrod was subsequently asked to resign from USDA, but was then offered another job at the department after the full video was released, proving her to be innocent…

Hugo Chavez Threatens To End Oil Exports To U.S.

The President of Venezuela, Hugo Chavez, threatened to put a halt on oil exports to the United States if there is a military attack stemming from escalating tensions between Venezuela and Colombia. Columbia is a close U.S. ally and Chavez believes that such an attack from Colombia would draw the intervention of U.S. military forces. Venezuela is America’s fifth biggest source of imported oil, supplying about a million barrels a day.
