The President of Venezuela, Hugo Chavez, threatened to put a halt on oil exports to the United States if there is a military attack stemming from escalating tensions between Venezuela and Colombia. Columbia is a close U.S. ally and Chavez believes that such an attack from Colombia would draw the intervention of U.S. military forces. Venezuela is America’s fifth biggest source of imported oil, supplying about a million barrels a day.
