Ahmadinejad's Motorcade Gets Scare

The Iranian presidential office denied that President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s motorcade was the target of a grenade attack as it traveled from the western city of Hamedan to a sports stadium.

The office has dismissed the media reports of the event, saying that it was simply a firecracker.

Ahmadinejad continued to the stadium where he delivered a televised speech to the country.

White House Freezing Appointees' Bonuses

The AP reports that the White House is freezing the bonuses for the 2,900 political appointees within the executive branch.

According to the AP, the decision will save the U.S. $1.9 million annually.

Wyclef Jean Running For President Of Haiti

Hip-Hop artist Wyclef Jean has announced his intentions to run for presidency of his native Haiti.  Jean who has lived in the United States since age 9, announced his candidacy days before the August 7 deadline.

Jean was very involved in the aftermath of a January 12 earthquake that ravaged the poorest nation in the western hemisphere, killing 200,000 people.

“The quake drove home to me that Haiti can’t wait another 10 years for us to bring it into the 21st century,” said Jean according to a Time interview.

Obama Turns 49 Wednesday

President Barack Obama will turn 49 Wednesday and, according to White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs, will celebrate the occasion in Chicago.

“I think his plans for tomorrow are dinner with some friends in Chicago, and I think he is looking forward to spending the night in his house for a change,” Gibbs told reporters Tuesday.

Wednesday will mark the second Birthday Obama has celebrated while in office. On his first, the President ventured into the press room and presented now-retired columnist Helen Thomas, who shares his August 4th Birthday, with cupcakes.

Campaign Launched To Legalize Marijuana 

On Tuesday, a campaign was launched to legalize marijuana in the United States. Called “Just Say Now,” after Nancy Reagan’s anti-drug slogan from the 1980s, is run by a diverse group of cops, students, judges, and bloggers that fall on both sides of the political spectrum.

The Huffington Post is reporting that the group supports 2010 initiatives to legalize marijuana in states such as Arizona, Oregon, California, Colorado and South Dakota and will back a 2012 initiative in Nevada.
