House Republicans Say New Health Care Proposal Threatens Medicare Recipients

A number of House Republicans argued Wednesday that cutting medicare funding will put both the program and its recipients in danger.

Rep. Roy Blunt (R-Mo.) said that the belief that the U.S. will be able to cut medicare funding without negative consequences is "the biggest fallacy in this new plan as we move forward."

Blunt said he was also concerned that the cuts would take money away from senior citizens who already have pre-paid into Medicare, a move Blunt says “will damage the system."

“It’s inappropriate to reduce the foundation of medicare in order to pay for a new government health plan,” Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) added.

GOP Congresswomen and small business owners joined together Friday to voice alarm about the dire consequences of Congress passing the current health care reform bill.

“The Democrat way is not reforming healthcare, it’s destroying it,” said Rep. Michelle Bachman (R-Minn.).

“We are very concerned about the way it jeopardizes the doctor-patient relationship, we’re concerned about the additional debt, the trillions in spending that will add to the children and grandchildren that come after us, but worst of all, it’s going to further hurt our small business owners at a time when our economy is in trouble,” said Rep. Cathy McMorris-Rodgers (R-Wash.).

“President Obama’s prescription for healthcare reform for our nation is the wrong prescription for American families. We do not believe that we should put a federal bureaucrat between the patient and the doctor,” said Rep. Mary Fallin (R-Okla.).

Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) said Republicans have a plan that addresses costs, access, and insurance company accountability, but her Democratic counterparts will not listen. “We have been pushing forward our ideas, pushing forward our plans. It is unfortunate that the Democrat-led House is not wanting to make this a bipartisan goal of doing healthcare right,” she said.

Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-N.C.) disputed President Obama’s claim that 47 million Americans lack healthcare. “There are no Americans who don’t have healthcare. Everybody in this country has access to healthcare,” she said. “We do have about 7.5 million Americans who want to purchase health insurance who can not afford it,” she said, urging Congress to adopt a new plan for health care reform that won’t “destroy what is good about healthcare in this country” and “give the government control of our lives.”

Universal Health Care To Cost Money And Jobs

U.S. Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) discussed the future of employer provided healthcare at the Heritage Foundation.
 
The lessons learned from failed universal care programs are alarming and allowing the United States to become another “laboratory” for mandated health care programs will yield similar results, according to U.S. Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.). According to Blackburn, who spoke comments yesterday at the Heritage Foundation, these systems yield runaway administrative costs and diminish patient access to quality healthcare due to "serious government mismanagement." 
 
“We need to shift the focus,” Blackburn said. “So its not about punishment, and punishing employers, and punishing individuals, and limiting access. That’s not the way to do health care reform. We need to flip it and focus on the positive.” 

Blackburn said that U.S. health care reform needs to be a priority of the government. However,   putting insurance in the hands of the consumer allows more people to have access to healthcare while keeping costs down, she said. The “pay to play” system for employers to continue to provide benefits to employees under universal health care will cost more than 1.5 million jobs and shift 120 million people from private insurance to public insurance, she said. 

The “pay to play” system Democrats have proposed “allows” employers to buy into insurance programs through a newly proposed National Insurance Exchange. The insurance exchange forces insurance companies to offer the same benefits as their competitors, including the government, but they are paid more if the enroll higher risk patients. 

Blackburn: Democrates Trying To Tax As Fast As They Can

President Obama may be getting too friendly with Venezuelan President.

House Republicans will have conversations this week concerning the after math of the Summit of the Americas. The summit, which was held last week in Trinidad and Tobago, raised concerns for Republicans who have taken a hard line against Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, who for years has ridiculed the U.S. and openly criticized its foreign policy.

Congressman Mike Pence (Ind.), Chairman of the House Republican Conference and member of the Foreign Affairs Committee, outlined the upcoming week during a weekly pen and pad session, and said House Republicans will discuss Cap-and-Trade legislation which Democrats are proposing.

Cap-and-Trade would put a limit on the amount of greenhouse gas an oil or electric company can emit, and anything exceeding a set “cap” results in companies buying pollution allowances or credits from companies who have not exceeded their limits.

Pence said that Republicans are in the process of not only developing a rebuttal but offering alternatives to the “legislation that could result in utility rates of every American household increasing by $3,128 per year,” and leaves Republicans demanding details said Pence.

This dollar estimate is based on an Massachusetts Institute of Technology study, but according to a Pence staffer, Prof. John Reillyin, who is in charge of the study, believes the number should be cited lower due to anticipated rebates.

Pence said that “we are using the numbers that are in the public domain right now, the Democratic leadership has offered no numbers.”

U.S. Rep. Marsha Blackburn (TN) joined Pence in his discussions and said that there are other options that should be included in Cap-and-Trade legislation such as clean coal technologies and bio-diesels, and that it would be a shame to take things completely off the table simply because Democrats “are rushing to the finish line, trying to get in a tax as fast as they can,” said Blackburn.

“Congress has a gun held to our head, and we grab it and we shoot ourselves in the chest, ya know because that’s the action that they are taking this year,” she said.

Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) said, “The president is proposing to increase our national debt more than all prior 43 presidents combined,” adding $2.3 trillion more “to the national debt in higher deficits” than his own budget office stated.

Ryan said the budget increases taxes and spending. “But what’s so galling about this – we read today the Chinese are talking about a new currency, the Russians are talking about a new currency. We are debasing the value of the American dollar by borrowing way beyond our means,” he said.

“We are consigning our next generation to an inferior standard of living,” Ryan said.

He estimates the national debt will double in six years and triple in ten.

Dan Mitchell, senior fellow at the CATO Institute, a libertarian think tank, said, “That’s just the tip of the iceberg, because … we have trillions and trillions of unfunded liability for entitlement programs, … tens of trillions of dollars of unfunded liabilities in the future. We are in effect on a path to become the next Argentina.”

That other countries would consider a reserve currency other than the dollar is, he says, “a referendum that we are on the wrong track.”

Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), Chairman of the Fiscal Responsibility Task Force of the Republican Study Committee, said that one of the elements of greatness is the willingness of one generation to sacrifice for the next. The next generation, he said, will never be able to repay this debt.

He quoted Sen. Judd Gregg (R-N.H.) as saying this budget would bankrupt the country.

Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) said “One of my constituents said it best, ‘I am tired of Congress spending money I haven’t made yet for things I don’t want.’ When you look at the push for nationalizing healthcare, when you look at the cap-and-tax scheme (Cap-and-Trade), this is what people are afraid is going to pile on more and more debt.”

“I look at this as being economic abuse of (her grandchildren’s) future,” she said.

Rep. Gregg Harper (R-Miss.) said, ”When you find out you’ve dug yourself a hole, you should quit digging, but we’ve brought in heavy machinery, and we’re making the hole so deep that we’re not going to be able to get out of it.”

“We tell our children we can’t afford to get everything,” he said, and now the children, the public, are telling the parents, the legislators, “We don’t really have to have that.”
