Ron Paul Wins CPAC Straw Poll, Shunned By Young Conservative Group
Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas), a long-shot 2008 Presidential candidate with a strong libertarian streak, won the CPAC Presidential straw poll Sunday. Hours later, he was ousted from an advisory position he held with the conservative group Young Americans for Freedom.
Citing the Republican’s isolationist leanings, YAF’s Senior National Director Jordan Marks claimed that Paul has “fallen … out of touch with America’s needs for national security.”
“The United States is in a time of economic crisis, but this is no excuse to abandon the principles that have built this great country and spread its ideals to the darkest recesses of the planet,” Marks said. “Rep. Paul has abandoned this mission, abandoned the United States’ citizens, and abandoned the citizens of the world in their quest for their God-given natural rights.”
With 30 percent of the vote, Paul won the CPAC poll for the second year in a row. Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney came in second with 23 percent support. No other candidate broke into the double digits.
