White House Unveils Budget, GOP Balks
Republicans are blasting President Barack Obama for failing to request adequate cuts to the nation’s spending in the White House’s $3.73 trillion budget proposal, despite the administration’s claim that the plan will lower the deficit to $1.1 trillion in 2012.
“[The new budget] will continue to destroy jobs by spending too much, borrowing too much, and taxing too much,” House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) said during an appearance on NBC’s Meet the Press Sunday.
The criticism follows an aggressive push from Republicans to make large, dramatic cuts. On Friday, the House passed a continuing resolution that would cut spending by $100 billion within the 7 months left in the current budget year.
However, despite the divide, the White House is optimistic a compromise can ultimately be reached.
“We obviously don’t agree with everything that’s in the initial cuts that they’ve put forward. They’re not going to agree with everything we put forward tomorrow,” a Senior White House Official told reporters Sunday night, according to Politico. But we think we can come together to get something done here.”
