Sebelius: "Health care costs are crushing families"

At her nomination hearing Governor Kathleen Sebelius (D-Kan.) noted the challenges she faces if confirmed, stating, “Health care costs are crushing families, businesses, and government budgets. Since 2000, health insurance premiums have almost doubled and an additional 9 million Americans have become uninsured."

Health Sec Nominee "can't even get into the building"

At the nomination hearing for Governor Kathleen Sebelius (D-Kan.) as Health Secretary, former Senator Robert Dole (R-Kan.), told the Senate Finance Committee, “It would really help if you could get her confirmed before the recess. She can’t even get into the building and we are a little behind anyway and this is the issue of the year. So if you guys can all, you know, do something.”

Chairman Baucus laughing at Dole’s comments, said, “You are absolutely right and that’s why we are having this hearing. So we can get her confirmed this week.”

Health Secretary nominee: “We have by far the most expensive health system in the world"

“We have by far the most expensive health system in the world. We spend 50 per cent more per person than the next most costly nation. Americans spend more on healthcare than housing or food. General Motors spends more on healthcare than steel,” said Governor Kathleen Sebelius at her nomination hearing for Secretary of Health and Human Services in the Senate today.

McCain tackles Health Secretary nominee over government run health insurance plan

At the Governor Kathleen Sebelius' nomination hearing for Health Secretary, Senator McCain asked whether she supported a government run health insurance plan, to which Governor Sebelius responded, “If you are talking about insuring all 15 million Americans...if the question is do I support a public option side-by-side with private insurers in a health insurance exchange, yes I do.”

Secretary Gate's personal view that a "modest" amount of troops will remain in Iraq after 2011

Secretary of Defense, Robert Gates, backed up President Obama's statement today, in a conference cal,l that all U.S. combat troops will be out of Iraq by August 31, 2010 and that all U.S. troops would leave Iraq by 2011. Gates said that if Iraqi forces asked for U.S. troops to remain, he believed people "should be prepared to have a very modest size presence" remaining in Iraq.

The Secretary of HUD Steps Down

Alphonso Jackson, Secretary of U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, held a press conference this morning announcing his withdrawal from the office. Due to “personal and family matters”, April 18 will be the Secretary’s last day in office. In his statement, Secretary Jackson mentioned his achievements during the seven years in office and expressed his gratuity to the President for giving him the chance to “make America a better place to live.” Directly after the Conference, the Secretary left the room without responding to any questions.
