Senate Confirms Kagan

In a 63-37 vote, the Senate has confirmed the nomination of Elena Kagan to the Supreme Court. Five Republicans voted ‘yes.’ Kagan becomes the fourth woman to ever serve on the high court. My colleague Jay Tamboli has more here

Pelosi Applauds Senate On Passage Of State Aid Bill

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) released the following statement shortly after the Senate voted 61-39 to pass a $26 billion bill that aims to help states avoid mass layoffs:

“With today’s action, Senate Republicans’ tactics of delay, obstruction, and political posturing will no longer deny states and communities the aid they need to create jobs and provide vital services to the American people.  We will bring House Members back next week to pass this urgent legislation and send it to the President’s desk without delay.”

Short Lived Vacation: Pelosi Reconvenes House For Vote

Congressmen will have to postpone vacationing and campaigning for a few more days.

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi confirmed through a Tweet that she would reconvene the House Monday and Tuesday of next week to vote on a package to provide $26 billion in aid to states’ Medicaid and education programs.

The bill made it through the Senate Wednesday with 61 Senators voting for the legislation.

Senate Wants Answers On Mismarked Graves In Arlington National Cemetary

There may be as many as 6,600 mismarked graves in Arlington National Cemetary, according to Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.). A Senate investigation found that the management team at Arlington was largely unsupervised and operated under no oversight. Army Secretary John McHugh said solutions to the problem may include identifying remains by exhuming graves and allowing family members to identity caskets, or personal belongings in caskets. Small Business Lending Bill Losing Steam In Senate

The Senate will hold a cloture vote any minute on a bill aimed at providing relief to small businesses. However, odds of passage don’t look good. Senate Majority Leader Harry (D-Nev.) announced last night that talks between parties had broken down over the GOP’s insistence to have their amendments voted on. A group of Senate Democrats will address the media following this morning’s vote. My colleague Rob Sanna will have more on the story later…
