Obama Statement On Ted Stevens' Death

The White House today released the following statement from President Barack Obama on the death of former Sen. Ted Stevens (R-Alaska):

“A decorated World War II veteran, Senator Ted Stevens devoted his career to serving the people of Alaska and fighting for our men and women in uniform.  Michelle and I extend our condolences to the entire Stevens family and to the families of those who perished alongside Senator Stevens in this terrible accident.”

President Obama's Week Ahead

According to the White House, President Obama will start this week off by honoring the Super Bowl Champion New Orleans Saints in the East Room.  In the afternoon, the President will travel to Texas. He will deliver remarks in Austin at a DNC finance event and at the University of Texas at Austin. He will also travel to Dallas, Texas to attend a DSCC finance event. President Obama will spend the following four days working in Washington. On Wednesday, he will meet with his national security team on Iraq.

Obama and Cameron Catch Up

According to a press release from the White House, President Obama had a phone conversation with British Prime Minister David Cameron today. It has been almost three weeks since the Prime Minster visited the White House and they renewed their commitment on a shared global agenda. The two leaders talked about Afghanistan and Pakistan, as well as the ongoing efforts towards direct peace talks in the Middle East. Prime Minister Cameron also discussed his recent trips to Turkey and India.

Obama Turns 49 Wednesday

President Barack Obama will turn 49 Wednesday and, according to White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs, will celebrate the occasion in Chicago.

“I think his plans for tomorrow are dinner with some friends in Chicago, and I think he is looking forward to spending the night in his house for a change,” Gibbs told reporters Tuesday.

Wednesday will mark the second Birthday Obama has celebrated while in office. On his first, the President ventured into the press room and presented now-retired columnist Helen Thomas, who shares his August 4th Birthday, with cupcakes.
