Floods in Pakistan Kill Over 1,100

Devastating floods in Pakistan have killed over 1,100 people, and have left another 30,000 stranded.  The floods have also affected bordering Afghanistan, killing 65.  The United States, the European Commission, and the United Nations have all pledged aid and relief money to Pakistan.

U.S. Sailors Found Dead In Afghanistan

The U.S. Sailors whom went missing on Wednesday are now both confimed dead. CNN reports that the second sailor died of wounds received in a firefight with Taliban members before their captures. His body was recovered on Sunday. The other sailor was killed in that firefight

House Will Vote On War Supplemental Today

Later today, the House is expcted to hold debate on a $59 billion piece of legislation that would provide funding to U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. The Supplemental Appropriations Act of 2010 would also “provide $24 billion to help keep teachers, police, and firefighters employed during the recession, $13 billion to Vietnam War veterans that have been exposed to Agent Orange, $2.8 billion for Haiti relief, $5.7 billion for PELL grants, $677 million to strengthen the border, $275 million for the Gulf oil spill, and $725 million to offset other needs,” according to OpenCongress.

The Senate passed its version of the appropriations bill earlier this summer, yet struck the nearly $23 billion in domestic spending. It remains to be seen whether the House will vote to pass the slimmed-down Senate version, or whether it will pass the more expensive version, which would then go back to the Senate…

U.S Must Not Abandon Women And Minorities In Afghanistan, Says Former Ambassador

Ryan Crocker, former U.S. Ambassador to Iraq under President Bush and current dean and executive professor at Texas A & M University’s George Bush School of Government and Public Service, testified before a Senate hearing today on “Perspectives on Reconciliation Options in Afghanistan.”

He said the U.S. “can’t abandon women and minorities” in Afghanistan. “We would be held responsible,” he said.

Rep. Dennis Kucinich WikiLeaks, War In Afghanistan

Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio.) released the following statement after nearly 90,000 classified reports on the war in Afghanistan leaked via the website Wikileaks:

“These documents provide a fuller picture of what we have long known about Afghanistan: the war is going badly. It’s important to debate our presence in Afghanistan and Pakistan now,” wrote Kucinich in a press release Monday.
