Budget Experts Challenge Congress To Offset New Spending
The nonpartisan Committee for a Responsible Budget is urging lawmakers to refrain from adding to the nation’s already monumental debt level.
President Obama is expected to ask Congress to approve new spending to jumpstart the country’s stagnant economy, and lawmakers will debate how best to respond to last month’s Hurricane Irene, which caused billions in damage up and down the East Coast.
“We need to start abiding by the simple principle that if something is worth doing, it’s worth paying for,” said CFRB President Maya MacGuineas. “A sustained economic recovery is going to require that we stop adding to our debt burden.”
