McConnell Backs Balanced Budget Amendment On Senate Floor

Today, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) brought his call for a Balanced Budget Amendment to the Senate floor.

“The time has come for a balanced budget amendment that forces Washington to balance its books,” McConnell said.

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney quickly responded to the proposal saying the amendment is “not good for the economy, it doesn’t answer the problem.”

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor announced this morning that the House will vote on the proposed amendment next week. It needs a two-thirds majority in the House of Representatives, as well as the Senate to pass, so it is unlikely that the bill will foster enough Democratic support to pass Congress.
