Government Shutdown Still A Possibility
In Washington, lawmakers still are unable to find common ground on funding for the remainder of fiscal year 2011.
Republicans insist on including billions in spending cuts into any short term proposal, while Democrats say that such deep cuts are out of the question. If the two parties cannot reach an agreement by March 4, funds will run out and the government will be forced to shut its doors. So far, President Obama has shown little interest in publicly mediating the discussions.
The situation resembles a similar crisis in 1995, which ended with a government shutdown and work freeze for all federal employees.
Congress is in recess until this Friday, which leaves them only one week to negotiate a short-term plan before the March 4 deadline.
