Pelosi Touts Legislation To Insure Young Americans

By Julianne LaJeunesse- University of New Mexico

During a press conference Tuesday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) touted U.S. Rep. Kathy Dahlkemper's (D-PA) Young Adult Health Care Coverage Act as one way to insure young Americans.

Dahlkemper's health care reform provision extends young adult's access to their parent's health insurance until age 26. The House provision passed the Senate HELP committee, and if it passes as part of the larger Senate health care reform, it could present yet another way to insure "Young Invincibles," or that section of 18 to 34-year-old Americans who are uninsured whether by choice, hence their invincibility, or by financial situation.

Dahlkemper's proposal would amend the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 (ERISA) and the Public Health Service Act, allowing a dependent child access to their parent's insurance if they are unmarried, without dependents and a citizen or national of the United States.

Pelosi was joined by members of the collaborative groups Young Invincibles and Campus Progress.

Young Republicans meet with Sarah Huckabee

The Young Republican National Federation held a luncheon at the Hard Rock Café in Minneapolis to highlight the youth vote. Keynote speaker Sarah Huckabee surprised the crowd with a visit from former Gov. Mike Huckabee (R - AR) as well as Sen. George V. Voinovich (R - OH). Both Huckabee and Voinovich voiced their support for Sen. John McCain (R - AZ). Huckabee said McCain is a "strong leader of substance – not symbolism."

Besides applauding McCain, the speakers focused on the growing importance of the youth vote. By 2016 one-third of the electorate will be young voters, chairwoman of the Public Interest Research Group (PIRG) student chapters Lauren Kim said.

Speaking to the Young Republicans in the crowd, Voinovich said, "We have a wonderful opportunity to be successful in this campaign and John McCain may be the only person who could win in this campaign because of who he is."

Young College Conservatives Take to the Denver Streets

by Jessica Sall

Supporters of Presidential candidate John McCain arrived today at the Colorado Convention Center. They attempted to be heard by protesting against the Obama campaign. “We want to support our candidate,” stated protest leader of the supporter group, Charlie Smith, referring to Sen. John McCain.

“It’s a good thing for us to have the alternative view point out here,” Smith said, “As people become more familiar with Obama, the celebrity aspect of him will pass.”

The McCain supporters consisted mostly of college students from around the Denver area. “There’s a lot of youth support of McCain that doesn’t gets out there,” said Smith. According to Smith there will be other McCain supporter groups waking around downtown Denver with McCain signs, trying to get their message out. They will stay the length of this convention before continuing to the Republican National Convention next week.

Conference call discusses the economy and young Americans

A conference call featuring Tamara Draut, director of the Economic Opportunity Program at Demos and David Madland, director of the Center for American Progress today addressed “The Economic State of Young America.”

Draut and Madland discussed the many ways that the current state of the American economy effects young Americans. Draut noted that the job market now basically demands incoming workers attain college degrees, which proves to be costly for many unable to afford the substantial cost college tuition amounts to. Also, Draut said that because college loans are increasing and that those with lower incomes have to take out more money to go to school, many find themselves even further in debt upon graduation.

Madland discussed the “generational effect” (how different generations have different viewpoints) and how such viewpoints have led to younger people being more supportive of reforms such as universal healthcare.
