Chief UN Correspondent Dan Patterson will be attending briefings at the United Nations this afternoon, as well as following up on a local Brooklyn shooting.

The Washington Bureau will continue coverage on the floor of the House of Representatives, where Republican members continue to give speeches in spite of Speaker Nancy Pelosi's (D-Calif.) call for a five week recess. The Bureau will also attend both a morning and afternoon press conference held by those choosing to stay in the House.

In the afternoon, the Bureau will cover a conference call with Father Roy Bourgeois, founder of the School of Americas Watch, Purple Heart recipient, and torture survivor, and Joshua Casteel, a former U.S. military interrogator who served at the Abu Ghraib prison camp to discuss Sen John McCain's (R-Ariz.) view on torture. Later on, the Washington Bureau will attend a discussion on President Bush's recent visit to China in light on the upcoming Beijing Olympics.

The Washington Bureau will be covering a press conference with former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich regarding the speeches of his fellow Republicans on the House floor. These speeches continue in light of Speaker Nancy Pelosi's (D-Calif.) decision to call the House into recess for five weeks. The Bureau will also be covering an event with the Governor Tim Pawlenty (R-Minn.) discussing his view on how the GOP can achieve success by addressing the needs of Sam's Club Republicans.

In the afternoon, the Washington Bureau will attend a presentation from The American Enterprise Institute on the collapse of the World Trade Organization Doha round trade talks and its future implications. The Bureau will also attend a conference call on how the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing have become a staging ground for domestic and international protests against China's record on human rights, the environment, and even food safety, rather than a chance for China to showcase its rapid progress.

Bureau Chief Ellen Ratner will be covering the White House gaggle. Dan Patterson, TRNS Chief UN Correspondent, will attend a press conference and stakeout by Ehud Barak, Deputy prime Minister and Minister of Defence of Israel. Chief Pentagon Correspondent Meredith MacKenzie will be covering the weekly pen and pad only news briefing with House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.). Correspondent Dawn Jones will attend the House Armed Services Committee hearing on the Supreme Court Guantanamo Detainees decision.

The Washington Bureau will also cover the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on “Politicized Hiring at the Department of Justice”, along with an Address by Iraqi Interior Minister Jawad al-Bolani on the current security situation in Iraq. The Bureau will be covering a House Oversight and Government Reform Full Committee hearing on the U.S. facilities in Iraq, along with the Senate Rules and Administration Full Committee hearing on the “Bipartisan Electronic Voting Reform Act of 2008.” The Intelligence, Information Sharing and Terrorism Risk Assessment Subcommittee hearing on the future of Al Qaeda and the Disaster Recovery Subcommittee hearing on “Planning for Post-Catastrophe Housing Needs” will be covered by the bureau.

Later in the day, the bureau will attend a discussion on "The U.S. and the Middle East: Assessing the Bush Era Balance Sheet" and a news conference which will release a report on "Homeward Bound: Recent Immigration Enforcement and the Decline in the Illegal Alien Population." The Management, Investigations, and Oversight Subcommittee hearing on "The Quadrennial Homeland Security Review" will be covered, and the bureau will attend the discussion on "America's Health Care Debacle: Costs to U.S. Global Competitiveness" with former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle (D-S.D.). A discussion on "The U.S.-India Nuclear Agreement" at the Brookings Institution, and the National Parks Subcommittee hearing held in order to authorize the Secretary of the Interior to establish a commemorative trail in connection with the Women's Rights National Historical Park, will be covered. The bureau will also take part in a conference call with HOPE NOW which will discuss the record-breaking June 2008 and second quarter results of their foreclosure prevention efforts.

White House Correspondent Lovisa Frost will cover the press gaggle this morning.

The Washington Bureau will cover remarks from political analyst Cokie Roberts on how healthy America's health care debate is on the campaign trail and in the halls of Congress. The Bureau will also be covering a discussion on the role of state and local governments in combatting poverty, as well as a briefing on Zimbabwe's economic meltdown, Botswana's ascent and what it means for the rest of Africa. As new worries regarding America's aging infrastructure emerge, the Bureau will attend a forum on our nation's water system and ways it can be improved.

Later in the day, TRNS will cover an event discussing the congressional energy outlook with Senate Energy and Natural Resources Chairman Jeff Bingaman (D-N.M.), as well as a discussion with the Israel Project on challenges facing Israel today.
