OPINION: Remembering 9/11

The events of September 11, 2001, will be remembered for two things: First, the awakening of America to the danger of terrorism. Second, the incredible unity that was ours, at least for a short while following the 9/11 attacks.

Are we safer now than then? There is no clear answer. Yes, we fortunately have had no repeat attack on that same scale. But many lesser attacks have been thwarted, while some have succeeded. Most notable were the killings at Ford Hood by a soldier who was also an Islamist jihadist.

The notion of home-grown terrorists is still foreign to many, such as the media who condemned the Congressional hearings into al-Qaida efforts to recruit from within America’s Muslim community.

As well as remembering those who died and displayed courage on 9/11, we must never forget that eternal vigilance is the price of liberty.

From The Heritage Foundation, I’m Ernest Istook.
