OPINION: Feds Oppose Crackdown

It’s disappointing—but not surprising—that the Obama Administration wants to halt state crackdowns against illegal immigration.

The feds are suing to stop Alabama’s new law that requires public schools to verify the legal status of new students. And lets law enforcement check the status of people who have been legally stopped.

The U.S. Department of Justice calls that harassment.

Alabama can take heart that the Supreme Court recently upheld Arizona’s law that requires businesses to verify that workers are legal, and punishes companies that don’t comply. But another Arizona law is still tied up in court.

States have not been idle as Washington has failed to enforce immigration laws, and it’s outrageous that the feds want to block that enforcement.

Eventually, Alabama’s law and laws of other states will require a Supreme Court ruling to validate that states can step in when the feds do a poor job.
