Poll: Christie’s Re-election Chances In Doubt
New Jersey Governor Chris Christie’s re-election chances may be in jeopardy, according to a new survey from Public Policy Polling.
The poll shows that the Republican governor, whose first term wraps up in 2013, faces 53 percent disapproval among New Jersey voters. 43 percent of the state’s voters support Christie.
The numbers reflect a sharp turnaround from January, when Christie’s approval numbers were at 48 percent and disapproval was at 45 percent.
Still, despite Christie’s climbing unpopularity, any race between him and a Democratic challenger would be close.
“Against possible 2013 opponents, Christie is also in a tight race. He leads New Jersey Senate President Steve Sweeney 42-40, ties Congressman Frank Pallone 42-42 and trails Newark Mayor Cory Booker 43-47,” Public Policy Polling said in a release. “If [New Jersey rock musician] Bruce Springsteen decided to make a run for Governor as a Democrat, he would also tie Christie 42-42.”
In addition, the agency found that if former Governor Jon Corzine, whom Christie beat in 2009, ran again, both would split the vote at 48 percent.
Many Republicans have urged Christie to enter the 2012 Presidential race, but the Governor has repeatedly stated that he will abstain from running.
The poll was conducted between July 15th and 18th among 480 New Jersey voters.
