Report: Obama's Fiscal Plan Will Mirror Commission's Proposal

The Washington Post reports this morning that President Obama will call on lawmakers to vote on the comprehensive debt reduction plan put forth by his fiscal commission back in December.

According to the report, the President will announce his support for the plan, named after the commission’s co-chairs, Democrat Erskine Bowles and Republican Alan Simpson, during a speech he’ll give tomorrow on the campus of George Washington University.

With Republicans in the House ready to pass the plan released last week by Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), the President will decide that rather than releasing his own plan, he’ll throw the weight of the White House behind the commisson’s proposals, which are already being turned into legislation by a bipartisan group of Senators — known as as the “Gang of Six.”

Click here for a quick summary and comparison of the two plans, courtesy of the Washington Post’s Ezra Klein.

As Klein aptly notes, however, Obama’s decision to endorse Bowles-Simpson will likely perplex folks, who will question why he didn’t endorse the plan when it was released over four months ago.
