Tea Party Group Plans Black Friday "BUYcott"
By Mike Hothi
Liberate America, a Philadelphia based Tea Party group, has come out in opposition to Occupy Wall Street’s Black Friday Boycott.
The Occupy Black Friday boycott would be directed at large retailers like Wal-Mart, The Home Depot, and Toys R’Us.
Boycott opponent, John Sullivan stated, “At a time when our economy is most fragile and ratings agencies are talking about another downgrade of the U.S. credit rating, it’s completely irresponsible for Occupy Wall Street to attempt to bring the U.S. economy to a halt on the busiest shopping day of the year.”
Sullivan has instead proposed “BUYcott Black Friday” to help stimulate the economy by encouraging people to go out and spend.
“We are trying to send a message to Occupy that we feel that businesses small and retail companies need support, not the opposite,” said group co-founder Don Adams. “They’re the ones that put people to work.”
In recent years, Black Friday has been the busiest shopping day of the year. Pro-business groups fear that a boycott would stifle the economy.
