NATO Confirms Striking Sirte Convoy
NATO aircraft struck the convoy now believed to have been carrying former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, according to Colonel Roland Lavoie, the spokesperson for Operation Unifies Protector.
The airstrike hit two armed vehicles identified as holding pro-Gaddafi forces. The vehicles, which NATO says were part of a larger convoy, were reportedly “conducting military operations and presented a clear threat to civilians.”
According to Pentagon spokesperson Captain John Kirby, preliminary reports indicate that the convoy was attempting to leave Sirte. Kirby could not confirm what type of aircraft performed the strike nor if it came from the U.S.
Since there are no international troops on the ground, neither NATO nor the U.S. government has confirmed that Gaddafi was killed following the strike, which leaders within the transitional government have told the media.
