Health Care Reform Repeal Passes Procedural Hurdle
House Republicans took a key procedural step Friday in their campaign to repeal health care reform.
Through a 236-181 vote, the House passed rules governing the length and terms of the debate that will take place before next week’s vote on the repeal. As it stands, no amendments will be accepted and there will be only several hours for debate.
Although the repeal will likely pass in the House, it will likely not receive Senate approval. President Barack Obama has also indicated that he will veto the repeal.
In light of the unlikelihood of a full a repeal, House Republicans are expected to follow the across-the-board effort with a push to remove specific provisions in the law, including the mandate for individuals to purchase health insurance, which has been at the heart of multiple challenge’s to the law’s constitutionality.
