Biden Travels To Pakistan

Vice President Joe Biden travelled to Pakistan Wednesday in the second leg of his unannounced visit to the region.

The Vice President held close door meetings with Pakistani President Asif Zadari and Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani. He also visited the U.S. embassy in Islamabad.

Following his meeting with Gilani, Biden made a statement defending U.S. involvement in the country, arguing that the U.S. was not violating Pakistan’s sovereignty by pursuing extremists. The Vice President added that the U.S. would remain committed to Pakistan since it was in the “vital interests” to both countries.

Touching upon the recent assassination of Punjab Governor Salman Taseer, decrying the attack as cold blooded.

“There is no justification for such senseless acts,” Biden said.

Shortly after speaking with the press, Biden travelled to a meeting with General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, the Pakistani Army’s Chief of Staff.

Wednesday’s visit marks Biden’s first trip to Pakistan since becoming Vice President.
