Pelosi To Run For Democratic Leader

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) announced via Twitter Friday that she will make a bid for House Minority Leader following the Democrats’ loss of the House.

“Driven by the urgency of creating jobs & protecting [health care reform], [Wall Street Reform], Social Security & Medicare, I am running for Dem Leader,” The Speaker’s tweet reads.

During an interview with Diane Sawyer on the morning after the election, Pelosi said that she would make a decision on her political future after consulting with the Democratic caucus.

Although the Speaker is certainly a front-runner for the position, there are some doubts that Pelosi would find support from more conservative members of her party. Numerous Democrats ran against Pelosi during the Congressional elections.

Rep. John Yamuth (D-Ky.) told a local news station this week that the Minority Leader position should instead go to current Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, a Maryland Democrat who is considered to be the liaison to the fiscally conscious Blue Dog caucus. Rep. Heath Shuler (D-N.C.) has also announced that he will run for Speaker against Pelosi.

Pelosi became Speaker in the Democratic wave that won the House for Democrats in 2006. She was the first Speaker to assume the role. Following Republican’s 60+ win in the House, current-Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) will likely be the next Speaker.
