D.C. Subway Bomb Plotter Arrested

The U.S. Department of Justice announced on Wednesday that a man suspected of planning several bombings at Washington, D.C. Metrorail stations has been taken into custody.

According to DOJ, 34-year-old Farooque Ahmed, a naturalized U.S. citizen originally from Pakistan, had attempted to coordinate attacks with FBI agents who he thought were members of al-Qaeda. It is believed that Ahmed received no help from terrorist groups overseas in cultivating the plots.

“Today’s case underscores the need for continued vigilance against terrorist threats and demonstrates how the government can neutralize such threats before they come to fruition,” said David Kris, Assistant Attorney General for National Security. “Farooque Ahmed is accused of plotting with individuals he believed were terrorists to bomb our transit system, but a coordinated law enforcement and intelligence effort was able to thwart his plans.”

Ahmed has been living in Ashburn, Va., a close suburb of Washington.
