Ickes says Mich. plan "hijacks" delegates

Harold Ickes, senior campaign advisor to Senator Clinton and DNC Rules & Bylaws Committee member, speaks before the vote on the Michigan delegate plan which would give each delegate one half vote and would allocate 69 delegates to Senator Clinton and 59 to Senator Obama. A proportional allocation according to the vote would give Clinton 73 and Obama 55. Ickes says that a lot of people did not vote but that that is not an excuse for overriding the views of the voters, and points out that the DNC Charter mandates "fair representation." He says that "hijacking" is not the way to "start down the path to party unity." He says that Senator Clinton reserves her right to take this dispute to the credentials committee. Levin: not a fair reflection of a flawed primary

At the DNC Rules & Bylaws Committee hearing, Senator Carl Levin (D-Mich) says when there is only one name on the ballot, that’s not appropriate. What we’ve done is what you have wanted us to do, which is to say that we tried to fix it, and we’re here as a reform group, and we’re proud that we tried to reform the system. We’re not going to back away from that, but how do you have a fair reflection of a flawed primary? (1:02)

Obama conference call looks at state of the race, focuses on Florida and Michigan voters in limbo

The Obama campaign today held a conference call focused on discussing the Senator's position in his quest to receive the Democratic nomination for the presidency. The call featured Obama Campaign Manager David Plouffe, Rep. Robert Wexler (FL), Rep. Kathy Castor (FL), former Rep. David Bonior (MI), and former DNC Chair David Wilhelm.

During the call, Obama’s supporters focused particularly on the status of voters in Florida and Michigan whose votes are still in question, and the overall race for delegates between Senator Obama and his opponent, Senator Hillary Clinton (D-NY).

Also, the Obama campaign noted that they are encouraging their supporters not to stage protests against Clinton in order to preserve and promote party unity, and would even consider a resolution in Florida and Michigan which would give some delegates to Senator Clinton. Wexler and Castor discussed that Floridians are concerned about “real issues” that could change their communities during the next presidency (such as improving schools and helping rebuild poor communities), and are uniting behind Obama.

Clinton Campaign says gas tax holiday wouldn't increase demand

In a conference call with reporters, Clinton Chief Strategist Geoff Garin says that the suspension of the gas tax would not cause an increase in demand. He says that people aren't going joyriding and would not do so. Most gas consumption, he says, is due to people driving to work and doing other necessary trips, so there would not be an increase. Who will survive the critics?

The Clinton Campaign held a conference call with the chief strategist of the campaign, Geoff Garin, the communications director, Howard Wolfson, and the deputy communications director, Phil Singer, to discuss the state of the race.

Geoff Garin started the conference by saying that Senator Obama’s closing argument in Pennsylvania was very negative and strictly directed to assault Senator Hilary Clinton. Garin talked about Senator Clinton’s strengths on overcoming the tough challenges that awaits her if elected president. In his opinion, the senator from New York is “far better prepared” to those difficulties than Senator Obama.

The conference call continued by statements from Howard Wolfson. Wolfson reminded the reporters that the Senator Obama has overspent in Pennsylvania three to one. he has spent a “roughly $11.2 million”, whereas Clinton “four million. he questioned Senator Obama’s capabilities by expressing his concern on Obama’s difficulties to win the swing states such as Ohio and Pennsylvania. He then added that Obama “has serious problems winning, he will do anything to win.”

Phil Singer talked about Obama being on the defensive due to “his concerns on his abilities” to become a president. He touched upon Senator Obama’s comments on the small town Americans and the Republicans’ pressure on the Democrats to correct those statements. Senator Obama has lost the support of the small town Americans, according to Singer.
