House Side Of Capitol Evacuated

Associated Press is reporting that police evacuated part of the Capitol building Monday after a powdery substance was found in the visitors’ gallery overlooking the House chamber.

Capital Police spokeswoman Kimberly Schneider said the gallery was cleared “out of an abundance of caution” while police investigated the substance.

Reporters in the House press office were also asked to move to other areas of the building. Schneider said there were only a few House pages in the gallery when the substance was discovered.

U.S. Slips In World Economic Competitiveness Report

According to the World Economic Forum’s Global Competitiveness Report 2010-2011, the United States has dropped two spots, slipping behind Sweden and Singapore into the four position.

The Global Competitiveness Report’s competitiveness ranking is based on the Global Competitiveness Index (GCI), developed for the World Economic Forum by Sala-i-Martin and introduced in 2004. The GCI is based on 12 pillars of competitiveness, providing a comprehensive picture of the competitiveness landscape in countries around the world at all stages of development. The pillars are: institutions, infrastructure, macroeconomic environment, health and primary education, higher education and training, goods market efficiency, labour market efficiency, financial market development, technological readiness, market size, business sophistication, and innovation.

BP Atlantis May Soon Be Shutdown

The national consumer advocacy group Food & Water Watch recently filed its long awaited lawsuit against BP in federal court for violating a number of federal laws in the operation of the BP Atlantis oil and gas platform, one of the largest of its kind in the world.
“We have evidence that Atlantis is unsafe and is in danger of creating an even worse spill than the one caused by the Deepwater Horizon explosion,” said Wenonah Hauter, Executive Director of Food & Water Watch. “Tony Hayward’s failure to be forthcoming when Congress questioned him about Atlantis and BP’s inconsistent statements over the last year are an indication that they are hiding the dangerous truth about Atlantis.”

NIH "Pleased" With Stem Cell Ruling

The National Institutes of Health issued a statement, Friday, reacting to a U.S. Appeals Court ruling on stem cell research on Thursday. The decision placed a hold on an injunction placed last month against using government funding for research in which human embryos are destroyed.

“We are pleased with the Court’s interim ruling, which will allow promising stem cell research to continue while we present further arguments to the Court in the weeks to come. With the temporary stay in place, NIH has resumed intramural research and will continue its consideration of grants that were frozen by the preliminary injunction on August 23. The suspension of all grants, contracts, and applications that involve the use of human embryonic stem cells has been temporarily lifted. Human embryonic stem cell research holds the potential for generating profound new insights into disease, cell-based therapeutics, and novel methods of screening for new drugs,” said the NIH.
