Sessions Takes Swipe At Obama's Terror Policy
According to Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.), President Obama’s approach to fighting terrorism has left America vulnerable to several near-attacks by terrorists over the past two years.
In a Washington Post Op-Ed published Thursday, Sessions accused Obama of “weakening the capabilities of the CIA and diminishing…intelligence-gathering efforts,” actions that he claims have decreased security and protection against al-Qaeda and other terrorist organizations.
The Alabama Republican recognized limitations placed on CIA interrogation by the president, as well as the administration’s focus on criminal prosecution rather than intelligence gathering as further hindrances in the fight against terror.
“These actions and policy statements demonstrate a dangerous return to the pre-Sept. 11 focus on a criminal-law solution to terrorism - an approach that the Sept. 11 commission found ‘contributed to widespread underestimation of the threat’ posed by terrorism,” wrote Sessions.
“The intelligence community should not be hampered in this way but instead allowed the crucial flexibility to pursue intelligence that will lead to the capture of those who are at war with the United States and committed to its destruction. Our intelligence officers need affirmation and support - not more constraints and second guessing,” he added.
