White House Taps Carter As Pentagon's No. 2
President Barack Obama has named Ashton Carter as the next deputy Defense Secretary.
Carter, who currently serves as the Pentagon’s chief weapons buyer, will replace William Lynn, who announced he would retire this year. Carter, if confirmed in the Senate, is tasked with mediating between the White House and Congress, who are looking to reshape the structure of defense spending.
The deficit-reduction plan recently signed by Obama slashes defense spending by $350 billion over the next ten years. Although the new law does not mandate these cuts and appropriators will make cuts where they see fit, Carter and other top Pentagon officials believe the defense budget will take a big hit.
