Out Of Poverty Caucus Re-Enters Budget Debate

The many budget proposals that cut benefits to federal social welfare programs, specifically Speaker John Boehner’s (R-Ohio), prompted the Congressional Out of Poverty Caucus, Wednesday, to reenter the budget debate and assert the plight of the poor and disenfranchised in America.

During a Wednesday press conference, several speakers announced protests on President Obama on behalf of the poor. Rep. John Conyers (D-Mich.) plans to confront the President when he stands before the Congressional Black Caucus September 21.

“We want him to know from this day forward…that we’ve had it,” Conyers said. “We want him to come up on our side and to advocate.”

Lisa Sharon Harper, Director of Mobilizing for Sojourners: Christians for Justice and Peace, announced that the organization will host a mobilizing summit in Washington, D.C. August 24-25 to counter Social Security and Medicare cuts.
 
Sojourners hopes that the march will “remind Speaker Boehner, Leader Reid, and President Obama that God is watching you.”
