DOMA Unconstitutional, Says Feinstein

Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif) rallied support today for repealing the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), which will be the focus of a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing tomorrow.

“I was only one of fourteen senators to vote against DOMA when it originally passed in 1996 because it was unconstitutional and was wrong,” Feinstein said. “Today, I believe it is still unconstitutional and wrong.”

According to Feinstein, the bill to repeal DOMA would be simple; it would strike the Defense of Marriage Act from federal law, freeing the government to legally grant the same kind of benefits allowed for married couples  to same sex couples.

“Tomorrow, the Senate Judiciary Committee will hold the first congressional hearing on the repeal of DOMA,” Feinstein said. “I very much hope it’s going to open the minds of many of my colleagues about repealing DOMA.”
