Nuclear Regulator Wants Swift Implementation Of New Recommendations

Nuclear Regulatory Commission Chairman Gregory B. Jaczko told the National Press Club Monday that he wants to accelerate recommendations put forward by a task force assigned to apply the lessons from the Fukushima Daiichi disaster to U.S. nuclear power plants and regulations.

The recommendations include pursuing efforts to initiate a plan that would allow a continuous flow of energy for 8 to 72 hours after the plant closes in response to danger of leaks or external threats, solidifying evacuation procecures and overhauling the country’s nuclear regulatory framework.

Noting that it took nearly a decade to implement suggestions made by the 9/11 commission, Jaczko said that he wanted the task force’s recommendations achieved within 5 years.
