Top U.S. Counterterrorism Official Stepping Down

The Associated Press is reporting that Michael Leiter, the head of the nation’s premier counterterrorism agency, is resigning.

Leiter has served as Director of the National Counterterrorism Center for nearly five years. The news of his resignation comes just a little over a month after U.S. special forces killed Osama bin Laden during a raid on the al-Qaeda leader’s secret compound in northwest Pakistan.

In a statement, President Obama called Leiter a “trusted advisor” who “will be leaving the National Counterterrorism Center, the counterterrorism community, and the nation in a significantly stronger position to confront the terrorist threats we face.”
