Group Urging Obama To Sidestep Warren's Confirmation Hearings

A progressive activist group is pressuring President Obama to appoint Elizabeth Warren to the head of the new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau during next week’s Senate recess.

Doing so would spare Warren from a potentially contentious confirmation process, though it would also open the President up to rounds of criticism from Republicans and transparency hawks.

The Campaign for America’s Future says, however, that having Warren lead the new agency is vital to ensuring that big financial firms play by the rules.

“After the financial meltdown of 2008, we do not trust Wall Street to watch themselves,” said the organization’s Co-Director, Roger Hickey. “A strong consumer-oriented bureau will help protect Americans from getting taken advantage of by Wall Street executives…Elizabeth Warren is the right person for the top job and the time is now.”
