Poll: Gingrich Has High Name Recognition, But Support Lags

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.) will officially enter the 2012 Presidential race with high name recognition, but significantly less support, according to a Gallup poll.

The poll finds that he is recognized among 84 percent of Republicans, but that his “Positive Intensity Score,” a marker determined by subtracting the percentage of those who have a strongly unfavorable opinion of a candidate from the percentage of those who have a strongly favorable view, falls below average.

The score, which comes in at 11, means that Gingrich is matched with former Iowa Governor Mitch Daniels. He is outdone by the bulk of the potential GOP candidates, except for John Huntsman, Gary Johnson and Donald Trump, all of whom score in the single digits.

Gingrich is expected to formally announce his 2012 intentions on Wednesday.

The poll was conducted between April 25th-March 8th. At least 1,500 Republican or likely Republican voters weighed in on each candidate.
