Congress Sidesteps Government Shutdown

Both chambers of Congress have now approved a temporary measure to keep the government operating through next Thursday.

The stopgap bill, which will cut current funding levels by $2 billion, passed through the Senate with a voice vote and the House by 348 to 70.

The House vote took place early Saturday morning, shortly after funding officially ran out.

According to both House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.), a plan to fund the government for the remainder of the year will follow soon after. It will reportedly come in at $78.5 billion less than the White House initially requested for 2011.
