D.C. Delegate Will Donate Congressional Pay If Gov Shuts Down
Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton, Washington, D.C.’s representative in Congress, announced Friday that she will donate her pay if the government shuts down.
“She will donate her salary for every day the federal government is shut down to non-profit organizations that are working to preserve and expand the District’s self-governing rights, for voting rights and for statehood,” a statement from Norton’s office reads.
Norton is making the move in an attempt to show solidarity with her constituents, many of which are federal and District workers, and will thus be hit hard by a shutdown.
Budget negotiations have failed to yield a compromise. Without Congressional action, funding is set to run out at midnight.
