Tim Kaine Officially Running For Senate

After months of speculation, former Virginia Governor Tim Kaine announced Tuesday that he intends to run for the Senate seat currently held by departing Sen. Jim Webb (D-Va.) in 2012.

On his newly launched campaign site, Kaineforva.com, Kaine highlighted his experience as both mayor of Richmond and state Governor.

“We’ve got to be unified and creative in this tough political world to expand jobs and educational opportunities in a fiscally responsible way,” Kaine said in a video announcing his campaign. “That’s what I did as governor and that’s what I’ll do as your senator.”

Kaine is expected to run against Sen. George Allen (R-Va.), who once held the seat but was ousted in the 2006 midterm elections.

Currently, Kaine is the chair of the Democratic National Committee.
