Report: Administration Crafting Response To Citizens United

A story published by Politico claims that President Obama may use his executive powers to counter a Supreme Court decision last year that lifted restrictions on political donations.

According to the report, the administration released a draft executive order last week that would force federal contractors to disclose contributions “to groups that air political ads attacking or supporting candidates.”

The order represents an attempt to partially negate a huge victory scored by outside groups in last year’s decision in the case of Citizens United v. FEC. In that case, the Court ruled that corporations have the right under the First Amendment to spend an unlimited amount on campaigns.

Democrats disagreed with the decision, and have since argued that it paved the way for a record-setting election cycle last year that resulted in Republicans winning back the House. However, lawmakers have been unable to pass legislation nullifying the ruling.
