Poll: Romney Closes Gap On Potential Presidential Victory

While the number of potential GOP presidential candidates continues to rise and fall, former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney has the best chance to topple President Obama in 2012, according to a recent poll.

A McClatchy-Marist poll shows that Romney has closed the gap on the incumbent president, raking in 45 percent support from likely voters, just shy of Obama’s 47 percent.

Romney made up some ground since the last poll McClatchy -Marist filed in January, when he trailed the president by 13 percentage points.

When matched up against many of the potential Republican candidates, Obama enjoys a more cushioned lead, from a 5 percentage lead versus former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee to a 26 point margin over the likes of former Alaksa Governor Sarah Palin and real estate mogul Donald Trump.
