Senate Republicans: No More Funding For NPR

Sens. Richard Shelby (R-Ala.), Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) and Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) wrote to Senate Appropriations Subcommittee Chairman Tom Harkin (D-Iowa), requesting his help in their effort to cancel federal funding of National Public Radio.

The trio wrote the letter in response to taped remarks made by a former executive of NPR, who told two men posed as would-be donors that the network would be fine without the help of federal funds:

“In this time of fiscal austerity, we should make wise investments and direct scarce federal resources to organizations that will use this funding to serve the needs of the nation,” they wrote. “It is our intention to work with our colleagues to terminate funding for NPR.”
