McCain Calls For Mubarak To Step Down

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), the Ranking Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee, posted a Tweet Wednesday that calls for Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak to step down.

“Regrettably the time has come for President Mubarak to step down and relinquish power,” McCain wrote. “It’s in the best interest of Egypt, its people and its military.”

McCain’s tweet reflects a schism on the right over the best move for Egypt. Many Republicans have argued that Mubarak’s presence is essential for providing stability in the region, warning that the fall of Egypt could be a boon to Iran.
