Advocates Lean On Obama To Back Tighter Gun Control Laws

One of the nation’s leading gun control advocacy groups is urging the Obama administration to push for more stringent regulations.

Paul Helmke, President of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, released a statement on Friday calling on the president to respond to last weekend’s shooting in Tucson, Arizona by creating a federal gun commission that would investigate causes of the tragedy.

“After the explosion of Space Shuttle Challenger, President Reagan created the Rogers Commission to investigate and document the causes of that tragedy.  The causes were determined within a matter of months and resulted in changes that made space shuttle travel safer,” Helmke said. “Given the approximately 100,000 Americans killed by guns every year in this country, we believe a Presidential Commission is among the most substantive responses that President Obama could offer to respond to the tragedy in Tucson.”
