House Urges Senate Action On DREAM Act
With the Senate scheduled to take on the Dream Act this weekend, a handful of House Democrats urged their upper chamber colleagues to open the legislation up to debate.
“There is no doubt that the majority of the Senate would vote for the DREAM Act. The issue tomorrow is whether there’ll be 60 votes to invoke cloture,” Rep. Howard Berman (D-Calif.), who drafted the bill, said during a press conference Friday.
Berman noted that there are 16 Senate Republicans who voted for 1986 version of immigration reform and 12 who supported the initial, stronger, draft of the bill.
“There are the votes, Republican and Democrat, to make this pass,” Rep. Xavier Becerra (D-Calif.) noted.
