Riot Police In Toxteth, Liverpool On Tuesday Night
* Violence ticked up in areas in Britain spreading from the northwest through the Midlands to new areas further south, but dropped sharply in London after 10,000 additional police officers were deployed there
* Nearly 770 people have been arrested in London alone so far, nearly 40 police officers and five police dogs have been injured - one death relating to the unrest is confirmed, three more deaths may be related; arrests overall must be 1000
* Conservative PM David Cameron has recalled Parliament for an emergency session Thursday (that will be a raucous debate)
* He, Lib Dem Deputy PM Nick Clegg and Conservative London Mayor Boris Johnson have been criticized and heckled by residents who are furious at the slow police response - they were initially told to stand by; Cameron hesitated for two days to break his vacation; Johnson was also overseas
* I mean, Brits are livid - left and right of the spectrum say the rioters and looters are a criminal element, from as young as 10 - however, there’s little doubt that harsh cuts in youth social services in marginal areas have left many inner city young people with nothing to do - 75% of youth services cut in some areas, in London borough of Haringey alone 8 of 15 youth clubs have been closed
** The intrepid British are banding together and taking to the streets to clean up; the no 2 trending twitter topic is #riotcleanup; brooms and cups of tea on riot shields are seen; “calm down and clean up posters” are made; people are turning out to turn away rioters
* The use of plastic bullets has been approved for the first time in history on the British mainland (they have been used in Northern Ireland and have killed 17 people)
* The looting and arson is hitting high end stores and tiny florists and greengrocers alike; kids are trying to sell loot on street corners and sorting stolen booty in front yards
* Photographers and journalists are being mugged and equipment stolen; one war reporter just back from the Libya front line was mugged and had equipment stolen
** The police oversight body says that the man killed by police (peaceful protest set off the first riot) did not fire at them although he was carrying a loaded gun; initially police said he’d opened fire first
