Poll: Public Still Wary Of Raising Debt Ceiling
Americans continue to be wary of raising the debt limit, according to a new Gallup poll.
In a survey conducted between July7th and 10th, 42 percent said that lawmakers should vote against the measure, opposed to 22 percent who said it should be raised. The numbers represent a slight decrease in opposition from the previous month, when 47 percent said that they would oppose raising the ceiling and 19 percent they would support it.
The White House has emphasized that failing to raise the limit on how much the U.S. can borrow will be catastrophic for the American economy. Currently, lawmakers are struggling to craft a plan to raise the ceiling while simultaneously offering a plan to reduce the deficit by trillions of dollars.
Lawmakers will continue negotiations at the White House Wednesday and are expected to meet each day until a compromise is reached. On Tuesday, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) proposed allowing the President to raise the debt limit in three separate installments if he can provide plans to match the increases in spending cuts.
