OPINION: Pullouts Come In Threes
From The Heritage Foundation, I’m Ernest Istook.
Three pullouts were news this week.
Overruling America’s top generals, President Obama says he’ll pull 33-thousand American troops out of Afghanistan—just in time for next year’s elections.
Obama also announced that 30-million barrels of oil will be taken out of our Strategic Petroleum Reserve. Will it lower gasoline prices? Maybe—but not much or for long. It’s less than a two-day supply of oil for the US. But when will we put the oil back to have it for military emergencies? Obama’s pulling out oil that cost less than $30 a barrel; replacing it will cost taxpayers about three times as much.
Finally, the Republicans pulled out from budget talks. They say they’re willing to meet again—but only if the President takes part next time, instead of sending the Vice President in his place.
Three big pullouts—and they all were announced within 24 hours.
